A new emphasis on winter wheat research: Regional Wheat Symposium in Tabriz, Iran

Winter wheat is a major crop in large parts of West and Central Asia, and a priority area for ICARDA and its partners. The 1st Regional Winter Wheat Symposium was held on 25-27 June in Tabriz, Iran, hosted by the Dryland Agricultural Research Institute (DARI), supported by ICARDA and CIMMYT, and attended by more than 100 scientists from nine countries – Afghanistan, Algeria, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan.

Twenty-four country reports and research papers were presented. They covered a range of issues: breeding methods, agronomy, conservation agriculture, breeding for second-priority traits (e.g. tolerance/resistance to cold, salinity, pests and diseases), and composition and performance of nurseries distributed by the Turkey-ICARDA-CIMMYT International Winter Wheat Improvement Program.

The discussions helped review the current status of winter wheat R&D in cold highlands in Iran and across the region; and outline a research strategy for the future. Specific recommendations were made on how to strengthen research by national programs as well as international centers. The symposium included visits to DARI’s research station in Maragheh and to farmers’ fields in the area.
