Prof Gian Tommaso Scarascia-Mugnozza

Prof Gian Tommaso Scarascia-Mugnozza, Emeritus Professor at the University of Tuscia (Viterbo) and President of the Italian National Academy of Sciences, passed away on 28 February, at the age of 85. Prof. Scarascia-Mugnozza was a world authority on genetics and biodiversity, and a strong supporter of the CGIAR. He was one of the founders of the International Board of Plant Genetic Resources (Bioversity International), and served on ICARDA’s Board of Trustees from 1978 to 1983. He was the driving force behind Italian government-funded initiatives that helped promote genetic resources conservation, and establish genebanks in a number of developing countries. The ICARDA genebank was one of his many initiatives.

Science has lost a visionary, and ICARDA has lost a friend. May his soul rest in peace.
