Prof. Iwao Kobori

Prof. Iwao Kobori, eminent scientist, former Vice Chair of ICARDA’s Board of Trustees, and ICARDA’s honorary ambassador in Japan, passed away on 26 November. Prof. Kobori is best known for his research on water resources, and particularly indigenous water harvesting and management systems, in West Asia and North Africa; but his interests were far wider. He trained a generation of young researchers; helped envision, plan and implement the research portfolio of several highly reputed organizations; and brought institutions together, creating strong and lasting partnerships. Two of many examples are the strategic partnerships he established between ICARDA and United Nations University and the Arid Land Research Center of Tottori University.

Prof. Kobori served on ICARDA’s Board of Trustees from 1997 to 2002, including a term as the Vice Chair. He had a remarkable ability to identify research opportunities – and partnerships – to improve the welfare and livelihoods of small-scale farmers; and the charisma and leadership to take new technologies to farmers’ fields. This is a sad loss to the entire scientific community; but his vision will continue to inspire us. May he rest in peace.
