International Symposium on Medicinal Plants

The 2nd International Symposium on Medicinal Plants was held in Petra, Jordan, 3-4 November, attended by 130 scientists from 20 countries. Dr Nasri Haddad, Coordinator of ICARDA’ West Asia Regional Program, delivered a keynote address, “Conservation of medicinal plants and their potential role in rural livelihood improvement and ecosystem sustainability in West Asia and North Africa”. The presentation, prepared jointly with Dr Ahmed Amri, Head of the Genetic Resources Section, described how ICARDA’s work on herbal, medicinal and aromatic plants (HMAPs) is helping to diversify production systems and increase farm income in dry areas. It also presented results from collaborative research on value chain analysis and marketing of HMAPs. Her Royal Highness Princess Basma Bint Ali of Jordan, presented Dr Haddad with a shield, in recognition of his contributions to agricultural development in the region.
