President of India keen to support agricultural research in dry areas

Her Excellency the President of India, Shrimati Pratibha Devisingh Patil

Her Excellency the President of India, Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil, visited ICARDA headquarters on 29 November as part of her State visit to Syria – marking a new chapter in India-ICARDA partnerships. The President reiterated the Indian government’s support for the Center’s work. “The results of ICARDA’s research are directly relevant and useful to farmers, particularly in developing countries,” she noted. “This is an institution of global importance.


The President was accompanied by national leaders from both Syria and India. The Syrian dignitaries included H.E. Ali Mansoura, Governor of Aleppo, and H.E. Mansour Azzam, Minister for Presidential Affairs. The Indian delegation included Hon. Bharatsinh Solanki, Minister of State; two Members of Parliament – Hon. K.E. Ismail and Hon. V.B. Singh – and H.E. V.P. Haran, Indian Ambassador to Syria.
