Libya-ICARDA partnerships: workplans and budgets for next season have been approved

Libya’s Agricultural Research Corporation (ARC) and ICARDA are partners in a large-scale research-for-development project, now entering its third year. The project’s annual Coordination and Planning Meeting was held in Tripoli last month, attended by about 150 scientists and research managers from both institutions. The ICARDA delegation was led by Dr Maarten van Ginkel, Deputy Director General for Research, and included a number of senior scientists from different disciplines.

The meeting reviewed results in various areas: identification and characterization of target watersheds, germplasm conservation, development of new varieties and training programs for ARC staff. Future workplans and budgets were also discussed, and approved at a subsequent meeting of the Program Management Committee. The discussions highlighted the need to strengthen activities particularly in two areas: flow of funding, and recruitment and higher-degree training of ARC staff.
