A new book, Plant breeding and farmer participation, co-edited by ICARDA’s barley breeder Salvatore Ceccarelli, discusses the rationale and approach behind participatory plant breeding (PPB) methods. It provides a wealth of practical information on how to implement PPB with small-scale farming communities. We quote from a review in the February issue of the PRGA newsletter: “This book demonstrates that PPB is in essence no different from conventional plant breeding, being based on the very same principles of Mendelian, quantitative and population genetics, and therefore has complemented the traditional approach to plant breeding.”
